BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Southwestern Athletic Conference has tabbed Alabama A&M’s Laura Avila and Jackson State’s Malayna Mallory for SWAC Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Weekly Awards.
Track/Newcomer
Avila continued her path to breaking school records by shattering a 43-year-old record in the 5000m on Friday to highlight the opening day of the USF Alumni Invitational at USF Track and Field Stadium.
Avila, who holds the Alabama A&M indoor school records in the 3000m, 5000m and distance medley relay, won the event, posting a time of 17:48.56. Her time broke the previous mark of 18:14.33 held by Serene Mitchell in 1983.
Field
Several Tigers recorded personal bests and season bests including during this past week of competition. Highlighted among those impressive performances was Jackson State’s Mallory in the hammer throw and discus throw.
