Championship Flashback: Alabama State Claims SWAC Indoor Track and Field Championship Title

This past season the Southwestern Athletic Conference crowned champions in 18 sports. In what was a remarkable athletic year, we look back at the teams that emerged as league champions. Our next flashback features the 2023 SWAC Women's Indoor Track and Field Champions, Alabama State University.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Alabama State Lady Hornets claimed the 2023 Southwestern Athletic Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship title in spectacular fashion on Friday afternoon at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

The Lady Hornets posted several impressive performances across multiple events contested at the championship meet while amassing a total of 149 points. 

Alabama State’s Shamia Jones secured first place finishes in the mile and 800-meter-dash while also earning the third place in the 5,000 meter run. For her efforts she was named the Most Outstanding Track Performer for the event.

The Lady Hornets’ Taranique Alexander ended the evening with a pair of school records and four personal bests in the events in which competed. Alexander dominated the field winning first place in the triple jump (12.09m) and long jump (6.00m). For her efforts she was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer for the event.

Alabama State head coach Ritchie Beene was named Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Hornets to their first Women’s Indoor Track and Field title since 2020. This championship marked Alabama State’s eighth title in Women’s Indoor Track and Field in the past ten seasons.

In the final team standings for the event Prairie View A&M claimed second place (127 points) while Texas Southern finished in third place (52.5 points) overall.
