MONTGOMERY, Ala.-  Alabama State erased a four-run deficit with six unanswered runs to defeat South Alabama, 7-5, on Wednesday night at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.

Trailing 5-1 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, the Hornets (15-16) delivered a decisive five-run frame to seize control of the game before adding an insurance run in the eighth.

South Alabama struck first with two runs in the second inning and extended its lead to 5-1 with a three-run seventh. Alabama State answered immediately in the home half, capitalizing on timely hitting and patience at the plate.

The rally began with RBI production from Aden Malpass, who singled to right to score two runs. Breydon Divine followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to one before Cale Clark delivered the go-ahead blow with a two-run single to left, giving the Hornets a 6-5 advantage.

Alabama State added an insurance run in the eighth inning when Fabian Santana doubled to right-center to plate Alex Espaillat, pushing the lead to 7-5.

On the mound, James Peterson (2-0) earned the win in relief, while Trey Power secured his first save of the season with 1.2 scoreless innings to close out the contest. Starter Joe Dolinshek kept the Hornets within striking distance, allowing two runs over 5.1 innings.

Offensively, Alabama State recorded seven hits, with Trey Callaway leading the way with a 2-for-4 performance and two runs scored. Malpass and Clark each drove in two runs, while Santana added two RBI, including the critical insurance run.

South Alabama was led by Duncan Mathews, who recorded two hits and two RBI, while Marc Stephens added two hits and an RBI in the loss.
