SWAC Tennis Weekly Awards: Apr. 1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Southwestern Athletic Conference has tabbed Alabama State’s Melisa Mekic and Martin Catrice along with Jackson State’s Paula Corbalan and Helen Hernandez for SWAC Tennis Weekly Awards. 
 
Women’s Co-Player
Mekic led Alabama State to a 2-0 week with SWAC wins over Southern and Bethune-Cookman. She posted a 2-0 record at No. 2 singles with wins over Bethune-Cookman and Southern and went 1-1 at No. 2 doubles with a win over Bethune-Cookman.
 
Women’s Co-Player
Corbalan won three matches over the weekend to help the Tigers remain unbeaten in SWAC play. She had a two-win day against Bethune-Cookman, including a match clinching 6-3, 6-3 victory over the Wildcats.
 
Women’s Newcomer
Hernandez won three matches over the weekend, to help the Tigers stay unbeaten and atop the SWAC standings. Her best day came against FAMU where she won both her matches, including her singles match where she clinched the win for Jackson State with a 6-0, 7-5 decision.
 
Men’s Player/Newcomer
Martin went 1-1 in doubles and 1-0 in singles competition. He won at No. 4 singles while his singles match against Jacksonville State was unfinished. Marting teamed with Metteo Lataste in doubles to defeat Southern.
