SWAC Football Team Preview: Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State Hornets enter the 2022 season under new head coach, Eddie Robinson Jr. The former Alabama State and National Football League star returned to his alma mater with aspirations to lead his team to a SWAC Football Championship berth.
 
Alabama State junior defensive back Irshadd Davis posted a team-high 67 tackles (13th in SWAC) and 41 solo stops en route to garnering Second-Team All-SWAC honors in 2021. He tallied three interceptions while posting six tackles for loss and two sacks. Davis was named to the 2022 SWAC Preseason First Team, the BOXTOROW All-American Team, and the AFCA All-American Team.
  
Redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Robert Alston is also projected to be a significant contributor for the Hornets this season. Offensively the team will also look to continue success rushing the ball but will have to find a key replacement for former running back Ezra Gray.
 
The Hornets will open the season on Saturday, August 27th at 6:00 pm CST on the road while representing the league in the 2022 Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge against Howard University.
