Prairie View A&M Falls to South Carolina State 40-38 In Four Overtimes

Box Score

ATLANTA, Georgia- Prairie View A&M took South Carolina State to four overtimes before falling 40-38 Saturday afternoon at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The Bulldogs improved to 10-3 on the season while the Panthers dropped to 10-4. Cameron Peters led Prairie View A&M's passing attack with 412 yards through the air, tossing four touchdowns without throwing an interception. The signal caller also added 35 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

For nearly two quarters, Prairie View A&M looked like it might turn the anniversary stage into a statement win. The Panthers scored early and often through Peters, mixing quick-strike throws to build a 21-0 halftime lead, then pushing it to 28-0 early in the third.

South Carolina State flipped the game with urgency and tempo, leaning on Offensive MVP Ryan Stubblefield as the spark. The Bulldogs finally cracked the end zone on a short touchdown run, then kept scoring in waves with a Jordan Smith scoring run, then a Stubblefield-to-Smith touchdown connection that would close the gap.

By the time Stubblefield powered in from a yard out early in the fourth, South Carolina State had wiped out the deficit completely.

Prairie View A&M still had one more punch. Peters fired a 78-yard touchdown to Cameron Bonner to retake the lead, but Stubblefield answered by driving the Bulldogs down late and finding Jordan Smith for the tying touchdown that forced overtime.

The extra periods were pure tension as the teams traded field goals in the first overtime. The second overtime came and went without points.

Under college football rules, the third overtime shifted to alternating two-point tries and both teams came up empty. In the fourth, South Carolina State finally broke through when Tyler Smith converted the Bulldogs’ try, and Prairie View A&M's final attempt failed.

Peters paced the Panthers rushing attack by accumulating 35 yards and one touchdown over the course of the game. Lamagea McDowell also added 15 yards on the ground.

Andre Dennis hauled in seven catches for 131 yards and one score. Cameron Bonner made his presence felt in the passing game, recording two receptions for 91 yards and one touchdown. The Panthers also added 77 yards receiving and one touchdown from Jyzaiah Rockwell in the game.

Cornelius Davis was impressive for the Prairie View A&M defense, collecting one interception. Sterling Roberts added 11 tackles, 2.5 TFL, and 2.5 sacks

Defensively, Prairie View A&M limited the South Carolina State rushing attack, holding the Bulldogs to 78 yards on the ground. The Panthers defense racked up four sacks and nine total tackles for loss.
