BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Southwestern Athletic Conference has named Alabama State’s Travis Jarome its 2020-21 Sports Information Director of the Year. The award was voted upon by the league’s sports information directors.
Jarome recently completed his fourth year at Alabama State serving as the Director of Strategic Communications for the department.
He currently serves as the chairman of the SWAC Sports Information Directors Committee while also serving on the CoSIDA Publications Committee and the Diversity and Inclusion Committee of CoSIDA. This past athletic year Jarome was tabbed as one of four 2020-21 SIDs of the Year by Black College Nines Baseball.
In addition, for the past three years Jarome has served as a valued member of the official statistics crew at league sponsored championship events. Other notable accolades under Jarome’s tenure include a full-scale redesign of the BamaStateSports.com website as well as significant growth on all social media platforms maintained by the athletics program.
Staying on the cutting edge of media field practices has been a trademark for Jarome during his tenure at ASU. Jarome and staff conducted the first virtual press conference for a SWAC member institution with the hiring of Mo Williams which saw over 100 media members globally participate in the event along with one-on-one interview sessions. He has also spearheaded along with his staff gaining over 2,300 new subscribers in addition to the creation of two new shows produced in-house by the media staff at ASU.
He currently serves as the social media chair for the Black College Sports Information Directors Association (BCSIDA) and is also a contributing writer for CoSIDA360 magazine while being highlighted for a feature story himself in that publication in “Storytelling During a Pandemic” by Rob Knox.
