MADISON, Ala.- Southern's John Guienze pitched his first complete game, as he helped lead the Jaguars to a 3-0 upset win over Alabama State to open up the 2021 Southwestern Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament Wednesday afternoon at Toyota Field.
Guienze (1-5) kept Alabama State (23-18) off balance most of the game, allowing only two hits and recorded nine strikeouts with just one walk. The complete game is the first nine-inning complete game thrown by an Southern pitcher this season.
The Jaguars got on the board in the third inning as Bubba Thompson led off the inning with a single to right field. He would advance to second after Isaiah Adams single bunt. Colton Frank moved Thompson to third and Adams to second with his sacrifice bunt. Judah Wilbur was hit by a pitch loading the bases for SU. O'Neill Burgos' RBI to right field scored Thompson as the Jaguars took the early 1-0 lead.
Southern added two runs in the top of the eighth on an RBI double down the left field line by Tremaine Spears to score Burgos who reached on a walk, extending the lead to 2-0. They would add another run on another RBI double down the left field line from Zavier Moore to score Spears for the 3-0 SU lead.
