BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southwestern Athletic Conference announced Football weekly awards where Southern’s Trey Holly earned Offensive Player of the Week along with Christian Johnson earning Newcomer of the Week. Florida A&M’s Denzel Johnson grabbed Defensive Player of the Week followed by Bobby Engstler swiping Special Teams Player of the Week.
 
SWAC Football Offensive Player of the Week: Trey Holly, Southern
The Redshirt Junior from Farmerville, Louisiana led the Jaguars to victory with 22 rushes for 200 yards and two touchdowns including his longest rush for 69 yards in the 50-31 win over Louisiana Christian on Saturday, September 19^th. Holly continues to be a force in the ground game as he leads the SWAC with 341 yards, while being ranked third with four touchdowns. Holly’s impact on Saturday was displayed with averaging 9.1 yards a carry, running through tackles being a force to bring down. Trey Holly heads into SWAC play as the rushing leader and with his first weekly honor of the season.
 
SWAC Football Defensive Player of the Week: Denzel Johnson, Florida A&M
The Junior Linebacker from Fort Lauderdale, Florida led the Rattlers with 12 tackles (seven solo and four assisted in the Saturday matchup against Tennessee State. Johnson has been the defensive anchor for Florida A&M, leading with 28 total tackles (14 solo, 14 assisted), one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and a pass breakup. Following a season-high, Denzel Johnson goes into SWAC Play ranked Top 10 in the tackles category and with his first weekly honor of the season.
 
SWAC Football Newcomer of the Week: Christian Johnson, Southern
The Junior Quarterback from Montgomery, Alabama helped lead the Jaguars to victory on Saturday, September 19 throwing 16-for-22 for 172 yards and four touchdowns in the air while adding one touchdown on the ground. Johnson connected with four different receivers in the passing game for touchdowns, showing he can get his entire offense involved for a team win. On the season, Christian Johnson has immediately made an impact to Southern Jaguars Football, throwing for 575 yards while adding six touchdowns and completing 60 percent of his passes. Johnson adds 71 rushing yards on the year with two touchdowns and now adds his first weekly honor of the season.
 
SWAC Football Special Teams Player of the Week: Bobby Engstler, Florida A&M
The Sophomore from Tallahassee, Florida added six punts for 257 yards, including three punts inside the 20 and his longest being a 57-yard punt in the Saturday Matchup against Tennessee State. Engstler has punted 31 times in the season for 1,254 yards, nine inside the 20 and four 50+ yard punts. As Bobby Engstler continues to be a contributing piece to Florida A&M, his way of flipping the field to give the defense a chance to defend with breathing room earns him his first weekly honor of the season.
