BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Southwestern Athletic Conference has tabbed Bethune-Cookman’s Andrey Martinez and Maikol Lucena, Jackson State’s Derek Arrocha and Texas Southern’s Zachary Laviage for SWAC Baseball Weekly Awards.
Hitter
Martinez continued his impressive offensive display this past week. In a stunning midweek win over #20 Florida in Gainesville, he had three hits, four RBI and a home run to go along with two doubles. In the series against Alabama A&M, he had six hits, six RBI, and a home run.
Pitcher
Arrocha picked up a win in the series final against Alabama State in a 9-6 victory. He worked 8.0 innings in the start and allowed four runs (only one earned) on six hits with nine strikeouts. The outing was the first win for Arrocha since a win over Yale back on February 21.
Co-Newcomer
In his first season with the program, Laviage has made an immediate impact for Texas Southern, showcasing poise and durability on the mound. The newcomer logged seven innings of relief this past week while allowing only one unearned run and limiting Arkansas-Pine Bluff to five hits.
Co-Newcomer
Lucena’s excellent debut season for B-CU continued with a perfect week that included a sweep of Alabama A&M and a stunner over #20 Florida in Gainesville. He collected six hits, scored five runs, knocked in five RBI, stole a base, and worked a walk. Behind the dish, he did not allow a single runner to steal, catching four on the week.
