LORMAN, Miss. – Kiarra Henderson scored 17 points and Nakia Cheatham added 16 with 14 rebounds, but missed free throws and layups proved costly as Alcorn fell 73-65 to South Alabama in the first round of the WNIT on Saturday at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
Alcorn ends the season at 17-14, while South Alabama (17-18) advances to face Purdue Fort Wayne in the second round on March 23.
Maya Hunkin-Claytor, honored pregame for setting the program’s single-season three-point record, finished with six points. Cheatham recorded her 10th double-double and added four blocks, while Henderson notched her 18th double-figure game of the season.
The teams battled early, with multiple lead changes before South Alabama took a 34-29 halftime advantage behind a late surge from Jeriyah Baines. The Jaguars outscored Alcorn 39-36 in the second half.
Alcorn shot just 12-of-23 from the free-throw line and missed 16 layups, while South Alabama capitalized with 26 points off turnovers and an 18-4 edge in second-chance points.
Cordasia Harris led the Jaguars in the second half with 14 points, and Tamara Ortiz added 10 points at the free-throw line. Henderson scored 15 second-half points to keep the Braves close, but South Alabama maintained control down the stretch.
