Alabama State Wins SWAC Indoor Track and Field Championship Title

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Alabama State Hornets claimed the 2023 Southwestern Athletic Conference Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship title in what was a highly competitive final day of events hosted on Friday afternoon at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

The Hornets posted several impressive performances across multiple events contested at the championship meet while amassing a total of 123 points. 

The SWAC Men’s Indoor Track and Field title was decided during the final event to conclude at the meet as Alabama State’s Isiah Palmer placed third in the pole vault with a mark of 4.25m to help secure the title for ASU.

Alabama State’s trio of Joshua Knox, Kendrick Winfield, and Jamarion Stubbs finished in first, second and third place in the 400-meter-dash subsequently giving ASU 24 total points.

The Hornets’ 400-meter-relay team consisting of Joshua Knox, Winfield, Tate, and Stubbs claimed first place at the event while setting a new league record with a time of 3:12.02 during the final running event at the meet.

Alabama State head coach Ritchie Beene was named Coach of the Year after leading the Hornets to their first Men’s Indoor Track and Field title since 2021.

Alabama State had previously claimed league titles during five consecutive seasons (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021). This also marked Alabama State’s sixth title in Men’s Indoor Track and Field in the past ten seasons.

In the final team standings for the event Jackson State claimed second place (120 points) while Texas Southern finished in third place (95 points).
