BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats and the Texas Southern Lady Tigers have claimed the 2022 SWAC Eastern and Western Division titles respectively after a highly competitive regular season across both divisions.
During their debut season in the conference the Wildcats finished regular season play with a 17-7 league record.
Bethune-Cookman head coach Laura Watten has the Wildcats clicking on all cylinders heading into the 2022 SWAC Softball Tournament having one their last three contests. B-CU concluded the regular season with a three-game sweep of Jackson State at home.
The Wildcats currently lead the league in ERA (2.68) and also boast two of the conference’s top pitchers in Hannah Ortega and Halyne Gonzalez.
Under the direction of head coach Raven Rodriguez the Lady Tigers had a remarkable season amassing the most conference wins of any team in the league (21). TSU enters tournament play as winners of their last nine outings.
Statistically Texas Southern boast one of the league’s top offenses ranking fourth in the SWAC in total runs scored (195). The Lady Tigers also feature some of the league’s top pitchers as TSU currently ranks second in the conference in ERA (2.86).
Inside the circle TSU’s Jazmine Gendorf has tallied 12 wins this season to go along with a 1.93 ERA in conference play.
At the plate Tevana Tate has paced the Lady Tigers offensive attack as she currently leads the SWAC in homeruns (10), while ranking fourth in RBIs (28).
The 2022 SWAC Softball Tournament is scheduled to take place May 10-13 at the Gulfport Sportsplex in Gulfport, Miss. The league is slated to announce the full tournament bracket after the conclusion of regular season games on Wednesday.
