BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Southwestern Athletic Conference has announced its 2022 SWAC Softball Preseason teams and individual award winners as voted upon by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors.
Alcorn State’s Amari Ramsey was named Preseason Player of the Year, while Texas Southern’s Naomi Reyes was tabbed Preseason Pitcher of the Year.
Ramsey was named the SWAC Softball Preseason Player of the Year for the second consecutive season after also garnering such honors prior to the start of the 2021 season. This past season she became the 15
th member of Alcorn State’s 100-hit club. She currently ranks as having the program’s third-most doubles in a single season (14). She concluded regular season play ranking 9
th in the SWAC in slugging percentage (.539). She led the Lady Braves in batting average, hits, runs scored, doubles and total bases this past season.
Reyes concluded the regular season as the SWAC leader in ERA (1.52) in conference play. She’s tossed 11 complete games highlighted by three shutouts. At the conclusion of the regular season she ranked 4
th in strikeouts with 78 while also throwing her first career perfect game against Alcorn State earlier in the season. She was tabbed for SWAC Pitcher of the Week honors twice this past season.
Texas Southern led all member institutions with five (5) total preseason selections followed by Jackson State (4), Alabama A&M (4), Alabama State (3), Alcorn State (2), Grambling State (2), Prairie View A&M (2), Southern (1) and Mississippi Valley State (1).
The Southwestern Athletic Conference will announce the 2022 Predicted Order of Finish on Wednesday, Feb. 2. A complete listing of the 2022 Preseason SWAC Softball Teams and individual award winners can be found below.
