BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Southwestern Athletic Conference announced its 2021 Soccer postseason honors on Wednesday. The all-conference teams and individual award winners were voted on by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors.
Grambling State’s Kailey Pena was named Offensive Player of the Year. Prairie View A&M’s Andrea Nugent was tabbed Defensive Player of the Year while Alabama A&M’s Jodi Medina was named Goalkeeper of the Year. Alabama State’s Camila Jimenez took home Freshman of the Year and Alabama A&M’s Emanuel Stephens was tabbed Coach of the Year to round out the list of individual award winners.
Kailey Pena, Grambling State- Offensive Player of the Year
Grambling State’s Pena had a phenomenal season leading the Grambling State offensive attack. Currently, Pena ranks first in the SWAC in goals scored (10) and ranks 37
th nationally. She's also second in the SWAC with three game-winning goals. The 2021 SWAC Preseason Player of the Year selection is also first in points per contest with 1.38 and she’s currently a three-time All-SWAC First Team selection.
Andrea Nugent, Prairie View A&M- Defensive Player of the Year
Prairie View A&M’s Nugent has played and started in all 15 of the Lady Panthers games this season. She has three goals along with four assists on the season, taking 21 shots with 10 shots on goals. The defensive standout has been named Offensive Player of the Week once and Defensive Player of the Week five times this season.
Jodi Medina, Alabama A&M- Goalkeeper of the Year
Alabama A&M’s Medina is the leader in shutouts in the SWAC with eight. She tallied four consecutive shutouts during regular season play. Medina has made 129 saves and only allowed 32 goals having a save percentage of 0.801. She has started in all 17 of the Bulldogs games and logged 1485 minutes during the regular season. She was named SWAC Goalkeeper of the Week on October 27 and was tabbed 2021 SWAC Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year.
Camila Jimenez, Alabama State- Freshman of the Year
Alabama State’s Jimenez played in 15 matches, all starts as a true freshman logging 1,378 minutes. She scored six goals on the season tallying 12 total points. Jimenez also recorded 42 shots, including 20 shots on goal for the Lady Hornets. She recorded a pair of game-winning goals while scoring goals in six different matches, highlighted by three in conference play.
Emanuel Stephens, Alabama A&M- Coach of the Year
Alabama A&M’s Stephens led the Alabama A&M Bulldogs to their first regular season title in school history. Alabama A&M concluded the regular season with an 8-1 record in conference play.
