Aaron Mackey was named the Director of Accounting and Finance of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in October 2018. He arrived at the SWAC office after working over 15 years in accounting in the oil and gas sector and over 10 years in the private sector, specializing in financial consulting and nonprofit auditing.
Mackey brings an extensive background in accounting, finance, auditing, and risk management enhanced by leadership, integrity, and discipline. Mackey's accounting career began in the oil and gas sector with companies such as Enron, Duke Energy, Sirius Solutions, Sequent Energy, and H.D. Morris Co. As an accountant, Mackey served in numerous significant roles such as supervisor lead, transitioning the accounting department to new software leading to its implementation and use.
In a separate project, Mackey led the automation of accounting processes, increasing accuracy, efficiency and productivity. Combined, these projects yielded a cost savings of over $200,000 per year. He also served as the supervisor lead for the adoption of the new Financial Accounting Standard (FAS 133), meeting Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance standard ahead of the imposed SEC deadline, resulting in cost savings over $500,000 per year.
Other accounting roles have included positions such as lead auditor for KTSU radio station and Texas Southern University athletics department, and as a defense accountant for clients being audited by IRS, resulting in over $100,000 in cost savings to clients. As a community volunteer, Mackey, along with a partner, co-founded a highly competitive AAU (girls) basketball team named the Houston Cobras, and garnered a prestigious Adidas sponsorship for the organization.
For more than seven years, Mackey served in various organizational roles with the Cobras including board member, organization advisor, head coach, and coach for player development. This successful program strengthened the skills and empowered over 100 young girls, with approximately 65% of team members receiving basketball scholarships to allow them to continue their education at colleges and universities around the country.
Mackey's love for youth, sports, and accounting has given him the opportunity to serve on numerous boards such as Kiwanis and YMCA, and in many different leadership capacities including President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Director.
As a graduate of Texas Southern University, Mackey earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and an MBA from the University of Phoenix. The combination of Mackey’s professional and personal experiences has established him as an elite forensic accountant, assisting businesses and organizations in successfully accomplishing business objectives and exceeding organizational goals.
