BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Following the opening weekend of action in HBCU Football, six Southwestern Athletic Conference Football earned national recognition in the Black College Football Polls, highlighted by Alabama State’s number two national ranking with 482 points and eight first place votes.
Following Alabama State, Jackson State checks in at number three with 446 points after a 26-24 win over Tennessee State followed by Prairie View A&M holding the number five spot with 328 points after an impressive outing versus No. 7 in FCS Football in Tarleton State. Following a number nine preseason ranking, Texas Southern makes the jump to number six with 258 points following a 42-30 win over NC Central while being the only SWAC team outside of Alabama State to receive a first-place vote with one. Grambling State holds the number eight spot with 142 points after a 49-7 win over Clark Atlanta and the final team representing the SWAC sees Florida A&M bump to number nine with 102 points following a 20-7 win over Albany State.
The Black College Football Poll is sanctioned by the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAC).
In addition, Alcorn State, Bethune-Cookman and Alabama A&M received votes rounding the nine of 12 football-playing institutions in the poll. Alcorn State added 64 points while Bethune-Cookman tallied 34 and Alabama A&M added 22 points.
