MONTGOMERY, Ala.- The Alabama State University men's and women's tennis teams have earned spots in the NCAA Tournament, announced during the NCAA Division I Tennis selection show on Monday.
The Lady Hornets head to Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., on May 2-3 while the Hornets will travel to Baton Rouge, La. on May 1-2.
Alabama State women's tennis will battle the No. 1 national seed and host the University of Georgia on Friday, May 2 at noon (CT). The match will follow the Charlotte (22-4) and Elon (15-4) match at 9 a.m. The winners of those first-round matches will play on Saturday for a spot in the Super Regional the following week. Match times are yet to be determined for the Athens Regional.
Michigan and Pepperdine open the regional at 2:00 p.m. CT on May 1, followed by No. 7 LSU taking on Alabama State at 5:00 p.m. CT. The winners of each match will face off on Saturday, May 2, at 5:00 p.m. CT for a spot in the Sweet 16 from May 8-10.
Both teams won their way into the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's tournament fields by claiming the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament titles last week in New Orleans, La.
The Lady Hornets defeated Jackson State 4-2 to win their second SWAC tournament title in three years. They finished the season 11-9 overall and 6-2 in SWAC.
The Hornets beat Alabama A&M 4-0 to claim their fifth straight SWAC Tournament title and eighth title in the last nine years. ASU went 10-9 and 4-1 in the SWAC.
