SWAC Football Weekly Awards: Sept. 8

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Southwestern Athletic Conference has tabbed Alabama A&M’s Cornelious Brown, Alabama State’s Lenore Jalil, Texas Southern’s Matthew Cooks along with Jackson State’s Gerardo Baeza and Quincy Ivory for SWAC Football Weekly Honors. 
 
Offensive 
Brown completed 25-of-34 passes for 260 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions and rushed the ball seven times for 69 yards and two touchdowns. His seven-yard touchdown run with 2:43 remaining in the first quarter broke a 14-14 tie between Alcorn State and Alabama A&M.

Co-Defensive 
Jalil recorded four tackles with two tackles for loss and a fumble forced. His fumble forced led to an Alabama State score as part of a 17-point third quarter as ASU defeated Southern on the road.

Co-Defensive
Cooks contributed nine tackles, one tackle for loss, one pass breakup and a forced fumble during Texas Southern’s game at Cal on Saturday.

Specialist 
Baeza finished the day with a pair of extra points and two field goals during Jackson State’s road outing at Southern Miss. He connected on field goal attempts of 40 yards and 46 yards and was a key contributor for JSU’s special teams unit.
 
Newcomer 
Ivory was named the Newcomer of the Week for the second consecutive week after recording 10 tackles in the Tigers’ loss at Southern Miss. He tallied a pair of solo tackles and also finished with one sack, 1.5 tackles for loss, and a quarterback hurry.
