BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southwestern Athletic Conference has tabbed Jackson State’s Irv Mulligan, Southern’s Kendric Rhymes, Grambling State’s Johnny Schifano and Andrew Jones along with Bethune-Cookman’s Dennis Palmer for SWAC Football Weekly Honors for their outstanding performances during this past week of regular season competition.
Co-Offensive
Mulligan led the rushing attack for Jackson State with 138 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown. He averaged 7.8 yards per rush and scored on a run of 51 yards in the first quarter that put the Tigers ahead at the time.
Co-Offensive
Rhymes led the rushing attack for Southern with 133 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown. He averaged 7.7 yards per rush and scored on a run of 51 yards that put the Jaguars ahead 24-14 subsequently sealing the game.
Defensive
Jones was once again a dominant force for the GSU defense. He tallied a game-high 12 total tackles with 4.5 for loss during the Tigers' 31-21 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The losses dropped ball carriers 23 yards, and included a half-sack as well as a fourth-down stop that forced a change of possession.
Specialist
Schifano had a big day punting the ball for Grambling, flipping the field and pinning UAPB deep in its own territory on Saturday. He punted the ball six times for an average of 42.0 yards per punt, with a long of 60 yards. He placed five punts inside the Lions' 15-yard line with two punts being downed at the 1-yard line and one being downed at the 5-yard line.
Newcomer
Palmer enjoyed a breakout performance for the Wildcats in their first win of the season at Mississippi Valley State Saturday. He rushed for a career-high 126 yards on 27 carries, with a long of 23 yards. It marked the highest run total for a Wildcat on the ground this season.
