BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Southwestern Athletic Conference has named Alabama A&M's Xavier Lankford, Jackson State’s Justin Ragin and Travis Hunter along with Mississippi Valley State’s Orlando Fernandez its SWAC Football Players of the Week for their impressive performances during games played this past weekend.
Offense
Lankford was a dual threat for Alabama A&M during the Bulldogs season finale versus Texas Southern. He connected on 6-of-8 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 76 yards and a pair of TDs on just seven carries. His stellar play helped Alabama A&M erase a 17 point deficit as he helped lead AAMU to a come from behind 24-20 win over TSU.
Defense
Ragin recorded five tackles, a career-high 3.0 sacks, and a career-high 3.5 tackles for loss in the Tigers' 24-13 win over Alcorn State to complete an 11-0 regular season. He contributed three of Jackson State's seven sacks as the defensive limited Alcorn State to 251 total yards and only 4-of-17 on third-down conversions.
Specialist
Fernandez was perfect on the afternoon, connecting on field goals from 36 and 26 yards out. In addition he contributed three successful PATs while also downing three of his five punts inside the twenty yard line.
Newcomer
Hunter scored two touchdowns during Jackson State's 24-13 win at Alcorn State. On defense, he contributed four tackles, returned an interception 44 yards for a touchdown, and tallied three pass breakups. Offensively he caught two passes for 49 yards on a key fourth-quarter drive, including a 19-yard touchdown reception for the final margin.
