BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Southwestern Athletic Conference has named Florida A&M's Xavier Smith and Kendall Bohler along with Jackson State’s Aubrey Miller Jr., and Alcorn State’s Andrew Smith its SWAC Football Players of the Week for their impressive performances during games played this past weekend.
Offense
Smith contributed a spectacular performance this past weekend for Florida A&M finishing with 13 receptions for a season-high 145 receiving yards and one touchdown. His efforts helped the Rattlers claim a 21-14 win at Alabama State.
Defense
Miller tallied a season-high 17 tackles (nine solo) to go along with a fumble recovery and one pass breakup during Jackson State’s 27-13 win over Alabama A&M. The victory helped JSU clinch the SWAC Eastern division title while improving the Tigers overall record to 10-0 for the season.
Specialist
Bohler blocked a Alabama State field goal attempt and returned it 51-yards for a touchdown this past weekend to help propel the Florida A&M Rattlers to a key league win. The block happened as the Hornets attempted a potential game-winning 53-yard field goal as time expired. FAMU subsequently won the game by a score of 21-14 capping off the eighth straight win for the Rattlers.
Newcomer
Smith came up with perhaps the biggest play of the day on defense for Alcorn State this past weekend versus Bethune-Cookman as he intercepted a fourth quarter pass before subsequently returning it 50-yards for the game-winning touchdown. The Braves would go on to defeat upset-minded B-CU by a score of 17-14. Smith also registered three tackles against the Wildcats including two solo stops while also forcing a fumble to go along with a pass breakup.
