BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Alabama State’s Ryan Nettles along with Southern’s Jordan Lewis and Cesar Barajas were all named Southwestern Athletic Conference Football Players of the Week for their outstanding play this past weekend the league announced on Monday.
 
Offensive/Newcomer- Nettles (Evergreen Ala.), playing in his first collegiate game and first game in three years, he finished the night 16-for-27 in passing for 149 yards. He threw two touchdown passes – one to Jeremiah Hixon to end the first half and another to Michael Jefferson. His long of 32 yards was a pass to Hixon in the back of the end zone on the run with 1:08 left to play in regulation.
 
Defensive- Lewis (Ocala, Fla.) had a career game during Southern’s 24-21 victory over Alabama State. He had a career-high 11 tackles highlighted by eight solo stops and four sacks against the Hornets. Lewis forced a fumble at the 14-yard line that was later recovered by Southern setting up first and goal. He also had five tackles for loss (23 yards) during the Jaguars season opening win over ASU.
 
Specialist- Barajas (Arcadia, Fla.) made a game-winning 41-yard field goal during the Jaguars 24-21 victory over Alabama State. Barajas was one-for-one in field goals during the game. He was also perfect in extra point attempts against the Hornets making all three of his attempts. Barajas also punted the ball four times for an average of 45.8 yards including a 52-yard punt and placed three punts inside the Alabama State 20-yard line.
