BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southwestern Athletic Conference has named Mississippi Valley State’s Kam’Ron Cunningham its SWAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week and Jackson State’s Jayveous McKinnis its SWAC Men’s Basketball Impact Player of the Week for their outstanding performances during games played Feb. 6-8.
Cunningham (Greenville, S.C.) posted a spectacular performance on Monday night erupting for 34 points to help lead MVSU to its first win of the season with a 68-65 road victory over Alabama State. For the week Cunningham averaged 21.5 points per game to go along with 4.0 rebounds per game and 2.0 assists per outing.
McKinnis (Brandon, Miss.) contributed 23 points and 30 rebounds in two games at Alcorn State and Southern respectively including a 15 point, 15 rebound, 3 block performance during the Tigers’ Monday night win versus Southern on ESPNU. McKinnis went 7-for-7 from the free throw line highlighted by the game clinching free throws to give JSU its best start in conference play since the 1992-93 season.
Other notable performances:
- Alabama State’s D.J. Heath matched his career high with 16 points against UAPB, before breaking that mark with 21 points against Mississippi Valley State as Alabama State split the two games this week.
- Alabama A&M’s Jalen Johnson was a key factor in the weekend sweep for the Bulldogs, posting a 13-point, 10 rebound double-double along with three steals in a 93-58 win against Mississippi Valley State on Saturday. He followed that performance by posting a game-high 22 points and seven rebounds, including the game winning basket in a 56-55 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Monday.
- Grambling State’s Sarion McGee tallied 21 points and 14 rebounds on Saturday versus the Southern Jaguars.
- Texas Southern’s Galen Alexander scored 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting and also grabbed five boards with three assists two steals and a block in TSU’s win over UTRGV.
