#SWACFB Legends Series: Prairie View A&M Panthers

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas- In celebration of the 150th Year of College Football the Southwestern Athletic Conference is proud to recognize several SWAC Football Legends that were coaches and student-athletes within the conference.

The contributions of these notable student-athletes have helped shaped the proud history and legacy of the SWAC.

Our next installment features student-athletes that played collegiately at Prairie View A&M University.
 
Prairie View A&M Panthers
 
Ken Houston
  • Former defensive back in the American Football League and National Football League
  • He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986
  • Played for the AFL's Houston Oilers from 196769, and after the AFL–NFL merger, with the Oilers from 1970-72
  • Twelve-time Pro Bowl selection  
  • Two-time First Team All-Pro selection
  • Ten-time Second-team All-Pro selection
  • Member of NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team
Otis Taylor
  • Former American wide receiver in the American Football league
  • Three-time Pro Bowl/AFL All Star Selection
  • First Team/AFL All-Pro Selection
Jim Kearney
  • Former defensive back who played twelve seasons in the NFL and AFL from 1965-76
  • Played quarterback for Prairie View A&M
  • Was drafted in the 11th round of the 1965 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions
  • Played for the Kansas City Chiefs from 1967-75 and for the New Orleans Saints in 1976
  • He started in Super Bowl IV for the Kansas City Chiefs
Jim Mitchell
  • Two-time Pro Bowl selection
  • Former professional American football player
  • Played 11 seasons from 1969-79 for the Atlanta Falcons 
  • Was selected to the Pro Bowl after the 1969 and 1972 seasons
  • Mitchell coached football at Morehouse College and Morris Brown in Atlanta
Clem Daniels
  • Running back in the American Football League and the National Football League 
  • AFL Champion
  • AFL MVP
  • Four-time AFL All-Star, two-time first team All-AFL selection, two-time second-team All-AFL selection
  • AFL rushing yards leader

About #CFB150 Anniversary
College Football 150th Anniversary is a non-profit corporation formed to plan and administer a national celebration of 150 seasons of collegiate football in 2019.

The commemoration will showcase the rich history and traditions of the sport and its contribution to American society and culture, while also promoting the opportunity it continues to provide to thousands of student-athletes across all levels of the sport.

The CFB150 staff reports to a Board of Directors made up of representatives from stakeholder groups throughout college football.  The corporation has office space at the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame headquarters in Irving, Texas.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) is considered one of the premier HBCU conferences in the country and currently ranks among the elite in the nation in terms of HBCU alumni playing with professional sports teams.
 
Current championship competition offered by the league includes competition for men in Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Indoor Track and Field, Outdoor Track and Field and Tennis.
 
Women’s competition is offered in the sports of Basketball, Bowling, Cross Country, Golf, Indoor Track and Field, Outdoor Track and Field, Soccer, Softball, Tennis and Volleyball.
