NEW ORLEANS – Alabama State and Alabama A&M will clash for the 2019 Southwestern Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Tournament championship after advancing to the semifinals following Saturday action at the City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center.

The defending champion Hornets downed Prairie View A&M 4-0, picking up the doubles point thanks to wins by Juan Rodriguez and Chris Andre in the No. 2 doubles match and Tomas Fernandez and Carl-Louis Luckmann at the No. 3 doubles flight.

In singles competition, newly-crowned Player of the Year Ion Efrim defeated Rodrigo Yoshikata in straight sets, and Fernandez and Rodriguez followed suit, as the clinch-clinch scenario sent Alabama State back to the championship round.

The No. 2 seed Bulldogs defeated Jackson State 4-0 as well. Jackson State looked poised to take the doubles point as Juan Soria and Lebelo Mosehle won the No. 3 doubles match 6-3, but Alabama A&M picked up wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches, with No. 1 pair Hsiang Yi Wang and Cheng Chang outlasting Andrey Alawi and Richy Gamo 9-7 to clinch the doubles’ point after Nishangan Nadaraja and Shakir Elvin won its match 6-2.

From there, Elvin, Nadaraja and Fermin Ruiz eased past their opponents in straight-set wins, sending the Bulldogs to the finals.
