Lady Jaguars falls to N.C. Central, but rebounds against Howard

ZACHARY, La. –
The Southern University softball team salvaged a split to open the season, falling 7-3 to North Carolina Central but closing the day with a 6-3 victory over Howard during the Chef Celeste Challenge. Against N.C. Central, Southern fell behind 4-0 after one inning and was unable to recover. The roles reversed against Howard, as Southern jumped ahead to a 3-0 lead, leading by as many as 6-1. Tiara Scott earned the win with 5.2 innings worked, scattering six hits and fanning four batters while allowing three runs, all unearned.

Jackson State falls to Central Arkansas

HATTIESBURG, Miss. –
The Jackson State University softball team was unable to hold on to an early lead during a 9-3 loss to Central Arkansas during the Southern Miss-hosted Black and Gold Invitational. After jumping ahead 3-0 in the first inning, JSU surrendered nine unanswered runs, with five coming in an error-riddled fifth inning for the Lady Tigers. Kayla Owens had a pair of hits for Jackson State, and she and Kelsey Smith each drove in a run. Owens was saddled with the loss, allowing 11 hits and issuing four walks in 4.2 innings of work.

Castro, Bradford lead Alabama State past N.C. Central

ZACHARY, La.-
Charlene Castro launched a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and Alabama State opened the season with a 4-2 win against N.C. Central amid frigid conditions at the Chef Celeste Challenge, hosted by Southern University.

Devilettes held in check versus San Jose State

HAMMOND, La. –
The Mississippi Valley State University softball team was limited to just a pair of hits during a 4-0 loss to San Jose State at the Southeastern Louisiana-hosted Lion Classic Friday afternoon. Alyssa Montes and Alejandra Salazar combined to allow five hits to the Spartans, with Montes receiving the loss after she allowed four hits and two earned runs and walked four in three innings.

PVAMU rolls over Howard in season opener

ZACHARY, La.-
The Prairie View A&M University softball team used a fast start to earn a 7-1 victory over Howard during a chilly day one of the Chef Celeste Challenge hosted by Southern University. Laurisa Hernandez and Megan Jimenez each picked up a pair of RBI, and Cameron Lavergne and Brelyn Senegal collected two hits a piece. Crystal Castillo earned the complete game win, scattering five hits and striking out four.
