Hamer powers Jackson State to big win over Grambling State

JACKSON, Miss. –
Marneisha Hamer led put up 24 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Jackson State University women’s basketball team (12-13, 8-6) to an 89-60 win over Grambling State (12-14, 9-5) during Southwestern Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at the Lee E. Williams Athletic Assembly Center.

A close contest to start, Jackson State took control for good with a 12-2 run in the second quarter that ballooned its lead to double digits. Jackson State had five players score in double figures, with Kaisah Lucky posting 15 points and eight assists, and Christina Ellis scoring 13 points. Jazmin Boyd led Grambling with 15 points, and Shakyla Hill added 13 points, seven assists, six rebounds and four steals.

Prairie View A&M cruises past Mississippi Valley State

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas –
Behind 17 points and five blocks from Artavia Ford, the Prairie View A&M University women’s basketball team (12-11, 9-4) defeated Mississippi Valley State (4-21, 3-11) 91-55 Saturday afternoon in Southwestern Athletic Conference at the William J. Nicks Building.

The Lady Panthers jumped ahead quickly, enjoying a 23-6 scoring advantage in the first quarter and leading by double figures the rest of the way. Sierra Shepherd added 11 points and eight assists for Prairie View A&M, which shot 36-of-64 (56.3 percent) from the field during the game. Desiray Mosley and LaKendra Bassett each scored 14 points for Mississippi Valley State.

Alabama State takes down Alcorn State

LORMAN, Miss. –
Alabama State cruised to an uncomplicated Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory over the Lady Braves of Alcorn State, winning by a final score of 70-58 inside of Davey L. Whitney Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Three Lady Hornet (10-14, 9-4 SWAC) players scored in double figures during the victory, as Shmya Ward recorded a new-career high with 25 points and seven rebounds. Ayana Emmanuel also finished with 25 points, and Jayla Crawford chipped in 12 points. De’Asia Brown led Alcorn State (4-22, 3-11 SWAC) with 14 points, while Toddriana Isler added 11 points and four rebounds.

Southern fends off Alabama A&M to clinch tournament spot

BATON ROUGE, La. –
The Southern University women’s basketball team (14-11, 11-3) became the first team to clinch a SWAC tournament spot, fending off Alabama A&M (12-12, 7-6) 68-60 at T.M. Elmore Gymnasium Saturday afternoon during Southwestern Athletic Conference action.

Alyric Scott led the Jaguars with 16 points and nine rebounds, and Taneara Moore pulled down a team-best 11 boards, scoring eight points as well. Nigeria Jones led Alabama A&M with 12 points, and Tierra Dark chipped in 10 points.

Texas Southern pulls away from UAPB

HOUSTON –
A big third quarter aided the Texas Southern University women’s basketball team (11-13, 7-6) in a 62-49 win over the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (5-15, 2-12) Saturday evening during Southwestern Athletic Conference play at the H&PE Arena.

Tied 25-25 at the half, Texas Southern outscored UAPB 20-10 in the third quarter to go ahead by double digits. The Lady Tigers opened the fourth quarter on a -0 run, ultimately sealing the win down the stretch. Niya Mitchell recorded a double-double with 14 points and 18 rebounds, and Marquia Turner added 13 points. Noe’ll Taylor led UAPB with 12 points.
