Alabama State Claims 2019 SWAC Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships Title

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Alabama State Lady Hornets claimed the 2019 Southwestern Athletic Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships title scoring a total of 188.5 points.
Alabama State has now claimed 11 straight SWAC championships, a mark that is unmatched in the history of the league.
Prairie View A&M finished in second place (152) while Southern claimed a third place finish (70.5) to round out the top three teams at the event.
Alabama State head coach Ritchie Beene was named the 2019 SWAC Women’s Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year.
"I had the opportunity to learn under some legendary coaches in this conference," said ASU's Beene. "Every year we set out to continue to improve and we've been blessed to have some outstanding student-athletes that have helped us get the track and field program at Alabama State to where it is today."
Notables Finishes/Accolades:
- Alabama State claimed the 4x400 meter relay title with a time of 3:45.33, followed by Texas Southern (3:46.90) and Southern (3:47.11)
- Safiya John from Arkansas-Pine Bluff was named the 2019 SWAC Most Outstanding Field Performer as she led the field with 18 points
- Naomi Kiprop from Grambling State scored 23 points on her way to being crowned the 2019 SWAC Most Outstanding Track Performer
- Texas Southern’s Quintella Johnson tied a meet record in the high jump (1.79m)
- Prairie View A&M’s Brianna Robinson set a new mark in the pole vault (3.51m)
- Alabama State head coach Ritchie Beene was named the 2019 SWAC Women’s Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year
