BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Alabama State Hornets claimed the 2019 Southwestern Athletic Conference Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championships title scoring a total of 165 points.

Alabama State has now claimed three straight SWAC championships, a feat that has only been accomplished on three other occasions in the history of the league.

Jackson State finished in second place (135) while Arkansas-Pine Bluff claimed a third place finish (97) to round out the top three teams at the event.

Alabama State head coach Ritchie Beene was named the 2019 SWAC Men’s Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year.

"I had the opportunity to learn under some legendary coaches in this conference," said ASU's Beene. "Every year we set out to continue to improve and we've been blessed to have some outstanding student-athletes that have helped us get the track and field program at Alabama State to where it is today." 

Notables Finishes/Accolades:
  • Alabama State claimed the 4x400 meter relay title with a time of 3:14.41, followed by Arkansas-Pine Bluff (3:14.82) and Jackson State (3:15.85)
  • Jaime Brown from Alabama State was named the 2019 SWAC Most Outstanding Field Performer as he led the field with 22 points
  • Henry Kiplagat from Jackson State scored 25 points on his way to being crowned the 2019 SWAC Most Outstanding Track Performer
  • PVAMU’s Sunne Rodriguez-Weems was crowned champion in the pole vault (5.04 m) while also setting a new meet record 
  • Alabama State head coach Ritchie Beene was named the 2019 SWAC Men’s Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year
