BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southwestern Athletic Conference released its 2019 All-SWAC Teams on Thursday with Alabama A&M’s Abdul-Fatai Ibrahim, Texas Southern’s Donnie Corley, Jackson State’s Keonte Hampton, and Alcorn State’s Felix Harper and head coach Fred McNair receiving individual honors.
The teams were announced prior to the 2019 Cricket Wireless SWAC Football Championship Game set to be held at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium on the campus of Alcorn State University in Lorman, Miss. The all-conference teams and individual award winners were voted on by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors.
After helping lead the Braves to an eight-win regular season highlighted by a 6-1 mark in conference play, Alcorn State quarterback Felix Harper was selected as the SWAC Offensive Player of the Year. Harper took the league by storm this season after taking over as the Braves starter at quarterback. Harper tallied 29 touchdowns this season to go along with 167 completions, 2,387 passing yards good for a 167.9 efficiency rating.
Jackson State’s Keonte Hampton, a sophomore linebacker from West Point, Miss. was tabbed SWAC Defensive Player of the Year after racking up 106 tackles, 13 tackles for a loss, 4.5 sacks, and one forced fumble. Hampton ranks in the top five in the SWAC in total tackles, tackles per game (8.8 tpg), and sacks (4.5).
Texas Southern wide receiver Donnie Corley was selected as SWAC Newcomer of the Year after leading the league in receiving yards with 1,039 for the season. Corley amassed a conference leading 103.9 receiving yards per game and was the only receiver in the league to average over 100 yards per outing. He also tallied 72 total receptions (7.2 rpg) along with three touchdowns.
Alabama A&M’s Abdul-Fatai Ibrahim was named the SWAC Freshman of the Year after ranking in the top five in the league in receiving yards (1004), receiving touchdowns (11), receptions per game (5.4 rpg), and receiving yards per game (91.3 ypg). Ibrahim was one of only three receiviers in the league to accumulate over 1,000 yards.
Fred McNair was named the SWAC Coach of the Year after leading the Braves to a sixth straight SWAC East Division crown. Alcorn State concluded the SWAC regular season first in total defense, rushing defense, interceptions, offensive efficiency, and fourth down conversions.
