#SWACFB Legends: Alcorn State Braves

LORMAN, Miss.- In celebration of the 150th Year of College Football the Southwestern Athletic Conference is proud to recognize several SWAC Football Legends that were coaches and student-athletes within the conference.

The contributions of these notable coaches and student-athletes have helped shaped the proud history and legacy of the SWAC.

Our next installment features student-athletes that played collegiately at Alcorn State University (listed in alphabetical order).
 
Alcorn State Braves
 
Donald Driver, (1996-98)
 
  • Lettered in both football and track and field at Alcorn State. 
  • Was a five-time Athlete of the Year winner in the conference between the two sports over six seasons total.
  • Finished his collegiate football career with 88 receptions and 1,993 yards (19.69 yards per catch) in three sea­sons.
  • As a freshman, he recorded 12 catches for 249 yards and a touch­down.
  • Breakout year came in 1998 where he caught a team-high 55 passes for 1,128 yards and scored 10 touchdowns in 11 games as he averaged 20.5 yards per catch and 5.0 catches per outing.
 
Leslie Frazier, (1978-80)
 
  • Was inducted into the 2017 Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame
  • Made an immediate impact as a freshman at Alcorn in 1978 inter­cepting six passes and wrapped-up 62 tackles to help the Braves finish with a winning record.
  • Had a breakout season the next year as he picked off a school-record nine passes, a record that still stands.
  • Was part of a defense that limited the opposition to just 108.7 yards per game and 10.7 points per outing.
  • Helped lead the Braves to the 1979 SWAC Championship and in his final season as a Brave in 1980, Frazier led the team in interceptions with a total of five and recorded 49 tackles.
 
Jimmy Giles, (1974-76)
 
  • Used primarily as a key blocking halfback on Marino Casem’s 1976 squad and quickly turned the heads of NFL scouts.
  • Helped lead the Braves to winning the 1976 SWAC Championship.
  • Was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 2013.
  • Spent 13 seasons in the league after being selected as the 70th pick in the third round of the 1977 NFL Draft.
  • Went on to become a four-time Pro Bowl selection (1980, 1981, 1982, 1985).
Issiac Holt, (1981-84)
 
  • Immediately earned a starting position as a freshman at Alcorn State.
  • In his first year, he was tied for first on the team in interceptions with a total of five and recorded 32 tackles and one fumble recovery.
  • In 1982, he intercepted a career-high seven passes, recorded 38 tackles, and deflected 10 passes.
  • Earned All-SWAC Second-Team honors.
  • Dur­ing his junior season he intercepted six passes and recorded 36 tackles to help the Braves compile a 7-3 record.
 
Steve McNair, (1991-94)
 
  • Alcorn's all-time career passing leader (14,496).
  • Alcorn’s all-time career completions leader (958).
  • Alcorn’s all-time career passing touchdowns leader (119).
  • Ranks third all-time in career rushing yards (2,357).
  • McNair guided the Braves in becoming 1992 SWAC Champions, 1992 FCS Playoffs, 1994 SWAC Champions and 1994 FCS Playoffs.

About #CFB150 Anniversary
College Football 150th Anniversary is a non-profit corporation formed to plan and administer a national celebration of 150 seasons of collegiate football in 2019.

The commemoration will showcase the rich history and traditions of the sport and its contribution to American society and culture, while also promoting the opportunity it continues to provide to thousands of student-athletes across all levels of the sport.

The CFB150 staff reports to a Board of Directors made up of representatives from stakeholder groups throughout college football.  The corporation has office space at the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame headquarters in Irving, Texas.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) is considered one of the premier HBCU conferences in the country and currently ranks among the elite in the nation in terms of HBCU alumni playing with professional sports teams.
 
Current championship competition offered by the league includes competition for men in Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Indoor Track and Field, Outdoor Track and Field and Tennis.
 
Women’s competition is offered in the sports of Basketball, Bowling, Cross Country, Golf, Indoor Track and Field, Outdoor Track and Field, Soccer, Softball, Tennis and Volleyball.
