Game of the Night: Parsons’ buzzer-beater lifts Southern past TSU
BATON ROUGE, La. - Courtney Parsons was the heroine for the Southern University women’s basketball team as her buzzer-beating jumper pushed the Jaguars to a 63-61 win over Texas Southern Monday evening during Southwestern Athletic Conference play at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
Southern (4-9, 1-1 SWAC) led 26-25 at the break, but Texas Southern (4-9, 0-2) took control following a 19-15 scoring edge in the third, setting the stage for the fourth quarter.
After a jumper by Marquia Turner made it 48-44 TSU, Brittany Rose keyed a 9-2 Jaguars run that put Southern ahead 53-50 with 6:25 left. After a two-minute scoring drought on both sides, TSU went ahead 54-53, but the Jaguars appeared set to run away with it following a 7-0 spurt capped by a Rose three-ball that put Southern ahead 60-54 with 1:37 left.
The Lady Tigers snatched the upper hand thanks to Bre’nae Andrews, who sandwiched an Olivia Cunningham three-pointer with a pair of jumpers to put TSU ahead 61-60 with three ticks left, but a technical foul allowed Southern a chance for the win. After Skylar O’Bear converted on the second half of her trip to the stripe, Parsons sealed on the Jaguars’ ensuing possession, following her own miss with the game-winning putback.
Rose and Parsons led Southern with 13 points each. Rishonti Cowart added 12 points, and O’Bear chipped in 10. Cunningham and Niya Mitchell led TSU with 11 points each, and Richelle Velez added 10.
