BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Alabama State used a big first half and was able to pull away late in the second half, cruising to a 72-54 victory over Alabama A&M in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action at Bill Harris Arena Saturday night.

BATON ROUGE, La.- The Southern University men’s basketball team needed extra time to hand Arkansas-Pine Bluff its first loss in conference play, as the Jaguars defeated the Golden Lions 69-67 in overtime Saturday evening in F.G. Clark Activity Center. Southern started quickly, building a 41-25 lead at the break, but UAPB managed to force the extra period as Martaveous McKnight scored 18 of his game-high 29 points in the second half to bring the Golden Lions back into it. The Jaguars prevailed late thanks to clutch free-throw shooting by Bryan Assie and Sidney Umude, the latter of whom led Southern with 22 points, six rebounds and three blocks.
