Prairie View A&M 22, Grambling State 16  Box Score
DALLAS, TX – Prairie View A&M lead from start to finish in defeating Grambling 22-16 in the 93rd State Fair Classic.
 
The Panthers (3-3 overall, 2-0 SWAC) defeated Grambling (1-3, 1-1) for the first time since 2013 as well as ending the Tigers’ 26-game Southwestern Athletic Conference winning streak, which began in 2015.
 
Jalen Morton completed 23-of-34 passes for 269 yards with three touchdowns and one interception and also rushed 13 times for 62 yards. Dawonya Tucker, the leading rusher in all of Division I football, rushed 19 times for 72 yards and also caught three passes for 89 yards and a touchdown.
 
The Panthers’ defense kept Grambling out of the end zone until the fourth quarter, registering 10 sacks, including three by DE Willie Green.
 
Early in the fourth quarter, the Tigers turned their attention to quarterback Geremy Hickbottom, who came in off the bench in relief of starter Aldon Clark.  Hickbottom guided the offense for an 8-play, 63-yard drive as he scored on a three-yard run with 11:41 remaining.
 
The Tigers closed the gap to 22-16 with 3:34 left when Quintin Guice caught an 18-yard touchdown.
 
 After the Tigers scored on back-to-back drives in the fourth quarter, and recovered an on-side kick, Prairie View A&M CB Ju’Anthony Parker’s interception with 1:42 remaining sealed the win.

Quick hits
  • Alabama A&M rallied back from a 16-7 halftime deficit with two touchdowns in the third quarter to complete the 21-16 road victory comeback at Mississippi Veterans Stadium against conference opponent Jackson State.  The Bulldogs’ Brian Jenkins Jr. capped a four-play, 35-yard drive with an 18-yard touchdown run after Alabama A&M forced a Jackson State punt from their own end zone to gain possession with a short field. 
  • Alabama A&M’s Amir Berry intercepted a pass at their own 39-yard line to set up a nine-play, 61-yard drive that was capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by Trevon Walters. 
  • Aqeel Glass completed 25-of-42 passes for 244 yards with one interception for the Bulldogs (2-3, 1-1 SWAC).  Jenkins Jr. caught 10 balls for 112 yards and added the 18-yard rushing score.  Jordan Johnson had 16 rushes for 88 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Tigers (1-2, 0-1 SWAC).
  • With Alcorn State clinging to a 10-3 lead, sophomore defensive back Qwynnterrio Cole essentially put the game away with a 36-yard interception return for a touchdown to give the Braves a two-possession cushion with 4:14 remaining in the third quarter for the Braves (4-1, 2-0 SWAC).
  • De’Shawn Waller had 14 carries for 54 yards including a one-yard touchdown in the third quarter to a cap a four-play, 58-yard drive for Alcorn State. 
  • The Alcorn State defense held Southern (2-3, 1-1 SWAC) to 139 total yards of offense and 11 first downs.
  • Arkansas-Pine Bluff running back Taeyler Porter rushed 26 times for 137 yards (5.3 yards per carry) and Jamie Gillan made three of four field goals attempts (made from 37, 45, 31 and missed from 50).  Gillan also had a 41.2 punting average on six punts and placed one inside the 20-yard line.  The Golden Lions dropped to 1-4 overall.
