Game of the Day
MOBILE, Ala. – A furious rally coupled with a clutch defensive stop late allowed Southern (2-2, 1-0) to prevail over Alabama A&M 29-27 in the Gulf Coast Classic at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
After Bulldog quarterback Aqeel Glass scored from two yards out with 1:13 remaining to cap an 11-play, 71-yard drive, Glass called his own number for the ensuing two-point try, but the Jaguars’ defense stonewalled him at the one-yard line, and Southern recovered the ensuing onside kick to preserve the win.
The Bulldogs (1-3, 0-1) initially led 21-6 after responding to Southern’s first strike with three unanswered scores in the first quarter, two coming from Bulldogs running back Jordan Bentley. From there, Southern got on the comeback trail. The Jaguars stuffed Bentley for a safety and got an 11-yard scoring strike from John Lampley to Devon Bell to pull within one possession just before half.
Benn scored on a two-yard run midway through the third, and Jarmarqueza Mims scored the go-ahead touchdown for Southern on a 25-yard run, setting the stage for the dramatic conclusion.
Lampley threw for 204 yards and a pair of scores, and he rushed for 99 yards. Bentley accounted for 139 total yards (96 rush). Glass threw for 210 yards and two touchdowns.
