Jackson State 4 Alcorn State 3
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Jackson State defeated Alcorn State 4-3 to advance in the 2018cSouthwestern Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament, and eliminate Alcorn State.
Alcorn State jumped out to the early lead. Der’Vincent Hamilton hit an RBI ground out that allowed Justin Barna to score, to give the Braves the 1-0 lead after one.
Jackson State got on the board in the sixth. Jesus Santana walked with the bases loaded which allowd Stephen Vidal to score. On the next at bat, Raul Hernandez scored on a fielder’s choice, which evened the score at 2-2 after six.
Jackson State took the lead in the eighth. Jarvis Warner knocked in an RBI single in the to give the Tigers the lead. Lamar Briggs added another RBI single, to give Jackson State the 4-2 advantage after 8.
Alcorn State pulled within one in the ninth, making the score 4-3. However, Jose Tirado was able to keep the tying run from scoring, to give the Tigers the one-run victory and advance in the tournament.
Jose Tirado went 6.1 innings, striking out five and allowing four hits and picking up the win in relief.
Three Braves contributed an RBI in the loss for Alcorn State.
The Hornets were able to hang on in the bottom of the ninth, for the two-run win.
Four Hornets (Hernandez, Rios, Phillips and DeGuzman) each contributed an RBI in the win.
Williams finished the game one for four with two RBIs in the loss for the Panthers.
