Alcorn State 14 Arkansas Pine Bluff 13
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Alcorn State defeated Arkansas Pine Bluff in a wild back and forth affair, 14-13 in the first game of day two of the 2018 Southwestern Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament.
Alcorn State broke the ice in the second. A.J. Makarewicz knocked in a two RBI single to to the left side to give the Braves a 2-0 lead. Nicholas Hayes-Saltare doubled down the left field line, to add another run. Later in the inning, Wallace Rios Jimenez belted a two-run home run to right center, that made the score 6-0 in favor of the Braves.
The Golden Lions cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second. Jac Columbo reached on a fielder’s choice to first base, which allowed a run to score and put UAPB on the board. Jarficur Parker hit a RBI single to third which allowed another run to score. Later, Richard Sanchez singled to second base, which made the score 6-3.
The Braves extended its lead in the fourth. The braves scored two runs in the top of the inning, increasing its lead to 8-3.
UAPB scored one run in the bottom of the fourth. Kacy Higgins scored on a throwing error to cut the Braves lead in half, making the score 8-4.
In the fifth, JP Soriano hit a two-run homer to right field, putting the Golden Lions within two. Two batters later, Higgins belted another two-run homer down the left field line, evening the score at 8-8.
After each scored a run to make the score 9-9. Alcorn State took the lead in the eighth. Kyle Jenkins hit a two run homer to give the Braves a four run advantage at 13-9.
Arkansas Pine Bluff made the contest a one run game after Nick Kreutzer hot a three run home run to make the score 13-12 in the bottom of the eighth. John Magnuson later hit a sacrifice fly to allow a run to score, to tie the game at 13-13.
Alcorn State scored the go ahead run in the top of the ninth. Devin Walden singled up the middle, to allow the go ahead run to score. The Braves were able to hang on in the bottom of the ninth, to take the lead 14-13.
Prairie View A&M 13 Mississippi Valley State 1 (7 Innings)
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Prairie View A&M was in control in a 13-1 win over Mississippi Valley State to advance in the 2018 SWAC Baseball Tournament.
The Panther got off to a fast start, scoring two runs in the first to take a 2-0 lead. Steven Williams tripled down the right field line, to drive in one of the two runs.
The Panthers bats exploded in the third, scoring five runs on five hits to lead 7-0.
PVAM added three more runs in the three more runs in the fourth, extending its lead to 10-0.
The Panthers wound up winning by a score of 13-1 in seven innings, to advance in the tournament. The Delta Devils were eliminated with the loss.
Williams knocked in five RBIs, while going three for five with two runs scored in the win for the Panthers.
Texas Southern 8 Jackson State 4
NEW ORLEANS, La. – In a matchup of the two top seeds in bracket A, Texas Southern defeated Jackson State 8-4 to advance to the semifinals of the SWAC Baseball Tournament, while Jackson fell to the loser’s bracket.
Jackson State took the lead in the first. Dezmond Chumley singled through the left side. To drive in a run and make the score 1-0.
Texas Southern tied the score in the bottom of the second. Ricky Urbano knocked in an RBI single to drive in a run and even the score at 1-1.
In the bottom of the third, TXSO scored a run by drawing a walk with the bases loaded, and Blake Hicks hit a sacrifice fly out to drive in the another run, to make the score 4-2 in favor of Texas Southern after three.
In the fourth, Gaudencio Lucca hit a two RBI double down the left field line, making the score 6-2.
Jackson State cut its deficit to three in the top of the sixth. Jesus Santana doubled down the lf line to make the score 6-3.
JKST had a chance to cut into the deficit in the seventh. The Tigers had runners on the corners, but failed to score as Peyton Schneider struck out struck out two straight batters to get TXSO out of the jam.
Jackson State got within two runs in the eighth. Wesley Reyes hit a solo homer to left field to make the score 6-4.
Texas Southern gave itself some breathing room in the eighth. Christian Sanchez hit an RBI triple to right center, and Jose Camacho hit a sacrifice fly that allowed another run to score, making the score 8-4.
Lucca was one for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored to pace TXSO offensively in the win.
Schneider went six and one third innings, three runs on nine hits and striking out four.
Reyes was three for four five with two runs scored and one RBI in the loss for Jackson State.
Grambling State 12 Alabama State 7
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Grambling State defeated Alabama State 12-7 to advance to the semifinals in the 2018 SWAC Baseball Tournament.
Alabama State took the lead in the first inning. Ray Hernandez singled through the right side, to drive in a run and give the Hornets the early advantage. Cage Cox singled through the right side, to make the score 2-0.
Grambling State had a big fourth inning. Marshawn Taylor got the Tigers on the board with an RBI single. Later in the inning, Rafael Ramirez singled to right field to drive in another run. Isaiah Torres added a RBI single to give the Tigers a four run third inning and take the lead.
Grambling State extended its lead in the fifth. Marshawn Taylor singled up the middle to increase the Tiger’s lead to 5-2. Ramirez knocked in a three RBI triple later in the inning, to give Grambling a 8-2 lead after four.
Alabama State cut its deficit to just two in the bottom of the fourth. The Hornets scored one run on a wild pitch. Then, Ray Hernandez hit a double down the left field line, which allowed two runs to score. Later in the inning, Cage Cox hit a double to left center, that allowed Hernandez to score, to make the score 8-6 after four.
Grambling added a run in the top of the seventh. Torres knocked in an RBI single to allow Ramirez to score, which extended the Tigers lead to 9-6.
Grambling State added two runs in the eighth, and one in the ninth, making the score 12-6 and a six run contest.
Taylor was 2 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs scored and Ramirez went 3 for 5 with four RBIs in the win to pace the Tigers offense.
For the Hornets. Ray Hernandez was 2 for 4 with three RBI in the defeat for Alabama State.
