ALST wins SWAC Men's Tennis Championship

NEW ORLEANS, La.  – For the third time in the past four years, the Alabama State men’s tennis team are champions of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). 


The No. 1 seeded Hornets defended their crown as it defeated No. 5 Jackson State 4-0 in the SWAC Men’s Tennis Championship played Sunday at the City Park / Pepsi Tennis Center in New Orleans. 

The Hornets (11-9) received a boost from its No. 1, 3 and 6 singles players as all won their match and the No. 1 and 3 doubles teams each won to secure the doubles point. 

Alabama State won in a little over two hours as No. 1 Ion Efrim defeated Joan Sanson 6-0, 6-3, No. 3 Tomas Fernandez followed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Fritz Jacobs and No. 6 Alejo Calvis topped Vishu Prasad 6-1, 6-1. 

The Hornets earned the doubles point with wins from Collard and Efrim, who defeated Sanson and Prasad 6-3 at the No. 1 position and Chris Andre and Calvis, who topped Jacobs and Federico Mendieta 6-3.  Andrey Alawi and Stylianos Gkontsaris teamed up to win the No. 2 doubles match 6-1. 

Jackson State (7-19) was a four-time champion with their last title coming in 2016. 

The Hornets earned four spots on the All-Tournament Team as each recorded at least three wins.  Calvis was dubbed MVP with his fourth victory of the tournament on Sunday.  Alabama State’s trio of freshmen came up large throughout the season and in this tournament as Collard, Andre and Calvis combined for 10 of the Hornets victories during the semifinals and the championship.  Efrim added an important win on Sunday to add his team to the list. 

In leading the Tigers to the championship match, Stylianos Gkontsaris notched four victories along the journey playing from the No. 5 singles position and the No. 2 doubles spot.  Andrey Alawi also made the team with three wins playing from the No. 2 singles spot and the No. 2 doubles position. 

Coach Christiansz doubled up on his Coach of the Year accolades for a second straight season, winning both the Women’s Tennis and Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year awards.  Christiansz led the Hornets to a 6-0 mark in conference play and then won the semifinals against No. 4 Alcorn State 4-2 before taking the title on Sunday with a 4-0 win against No. 5 Jackson State.
