Four Devilettes notch double figures in narrow loss at ULM
MONROE, La. –
The Mississippi Valley State women’s basketball team fell 72-65 to Louisiana-Monroe Sunday afternoon in Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

The Devilettes (1-7) had four players in double figures, led by LaKendra Bassett’s 19-point, nine-rebound, four-assist effort. Makayla Bonner added 14 points and six rebounds, Kristy Parker scored 12 points, and Nyla Smith notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Down 43-40 entering the fourth, Mississippi Valley remained in striking distance throughout the frame. However, the Devilettes were ultimately unable to overtake the Warhawks, who led by as many as 10 at one point before a 7-0 Devilette run brought Valley within three. However, Arsula Clark converted a lay-up to give ULM some breathing room, and the Warhawks iced the game from the foul line.

Lauren Fitch led ULM with 19 points. Clark added 16 with eight rebounds and four assists. MVSU shot 35.9 percent (23-of-64) from the floor, compared to ULM’s 42.1 percent (24-of-57) clip.

Lady Hornets rally falls short versus South Alabama
MOBILE, Ala. –
Ayana Emmanuel scored 16 points and hauled in five rebounds, but the Alabama State University women’s basketball team was unable to overcome South Alabama during a 77-65 loss Sunday afternoon in the Mitchell Center.

Emmanuel was one of three Lady Hornets with double-figures in scoring, as Jayla Crawford scored 13 points and Shmya Ward added 10 points.

Facing a 17-point deficit at the half (40-23), Alabama State got on the comeback trail with a dominating third quarter where the Lady Hornets outscored South Alabama 25-10, getting with two of the Jaguars. Emmanuel tied the game with a lay-up to open the fourth, but South Alabama scrapped together a 10-2 run to pull ahead by eight. The Lady Hornets got no closer than six the rest of the way.

Antoinette Lewis led South Alabama with 21 points, Jayla Morrow scored 16 points, and Damaya Telemaque added 13 points and five assists. Alabama State shot 18-of-49 (36.7 percent) during the game, compared to South Alabama connecting on 44.6 percent of its tries (25-of-56). Alabama State was 26-of-29 from the foul line, and the Jaguars went 20-of-33 from the stripe.

  • Jameica Cobb led Alabama A&M with 16 points, but the Lady Bulldogs fell to Austin Peay State 75-58 Sunday afternoon. Cobb was the lone player in double-figures for Alabama A&M, who trailed 40-27 at the break. The Lady Bulldogs shot 37.9 percent (22-of-58) from the field as they were unable to make up ground on the Governors. Keisha Gregory led APSU with 21 points, and Nieja Crawford scored 12 points with 14 boards.
     
  • Grambling State (1-5) was limited to 22.2 percent shooting (14-of-63) during a 76-45 loss at Kansas. Shakyla Hill led the Lady Tigers with 12 points and eight rebounds. The Lady Tigers managed to force 20 Jayhawk turnovers but could not convert on extra chances, getting just seven points off the giveaways. Christalah Lyons led Kansas with 18 points and five steals, and Jessica Washington scored 16 points.
