Slow start hampers Southern vs. Arizona State
TEMPE, Ariz. –
Southern University’s women’s basketball team fell to Arizona State 69-47 Friday evening at Wells Fargo Arena.

Skylar O’Bear led Southern with 16 points, shooting 4-of-8 from three-point land. Danayea Charles added nine points and dished out four assists.

Southern found itself on the wrong end of a sluggish first quarter, as the Sun Devils opened the game on a 16-4 run. After Alyric Scott connected on a jumper with 2:39 left in the period, Arizona State closed with eight unanswered points, carrying a 24-6 lead to the second period.

Brittany Rose and O’Bear knocked down three-pointers to help get Southern within 13, but Arizona State closed the half on a 10-0 run, and the early hole proved too large for the Jaguars to climb out of as Southern trailed by at least 20 the rest of the way.

Southern shot 41 percent (18-of-44) on the night, including an 8-of-17 (38 percent) mark from three-point range. Arizona State was 22-of-51 from the field (43 percent), and held a decided advantage from the foul line shooting 19-of-26 (73 percent) compared to Southern’s 3-of-8 mark.

Courtney Ekmark scored 19 to lead the Sun Devils.
