Jaguars fall in shootout to South Dakota State
BROOKINGS, S.D. – A scintillating display from three-point range was not enough to propel Southern University past South Dakota State Friday evening, as the Jaguars (1-8) dropped a 101-92 shootout to the Jackrabbits at the Stanley J. Marshall Center.

Southern had four players in double-figures, led by Sidney Umude’s 26 points (17 in the second half). Richard Lee added 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting from beyond the arc. Eddie Reese scored 21 points and dealt nine assists, and Brendon Brooks chipped in 11 points.

SDSU led 19-13 near the midpoint of the first half when Southern began to find its stroke from downtown. After a pair of free throws by Umude, Reese buried a trey to bring the Jaguars within one, and Brooks followed with one of his own to give the Jaguars the lead. The advantage was short-lived, however, and though Southern battled to make the score 31-29, South Dakota State’s Mike Daum caught the hot hand, scoring 11 points from that point as the Jackrabbits ended the half with a 15-9 scoring advantage, ultimately taking a 46-37 lead into intermission.

In the second, Southern fell behind by double-digits and despite knocking down 60 percent of its tries in the period and matching SDSU on the scoreboard (55-55), the Jaguars couldn’t get closer than seven points the rest of the way as the Jackrabbits made 78.3 percent of their shots from the floor (18-23).

Daum led South Dakota State with 42 points and grabbed eight rebounds. David Jenkins added 22 points, and Tevin King chipped in 14 points with five helpers.
