Tigers take down Aggies for third Power 5 win of the season
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Led by Jayln Patterson’s 20 points, the Texas Southern University men’s basketball team cruised to a 88-73 victory over Texas A&M Saturday evening at Reed Arena.
The Tigers (5-8) had five players in double figures on their way to their third win over a Power 5 conference opponent this season. Devocio Butler scored 17 points along with five assists and three steals. Jeremy Combs chipped in 15 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Trayvon Reed notched a double-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks. Shawn Olden added 13 points, seven assists and a pair of steals off the bench.
The Tigers controlled matters from the start, leading the majority of the first half thanks to a 60.6 percent shooting mark (20-of-33) from the field. After Texas A&M’s T.J. Starks buried a three to pull the Aggies within two (28-26) with 7:02 left before the break, Texas Southern reeled off a 16-2 run to lead by as many as 16, ultimately taking a 46-33 advantage into intermission.
The Aggies managed to cut into the Tigers’ lead, but Texas Southern didn’t allow Texas A&M to get any closer than four after a jumper from Texas A7M’s Wendell Mitchell made the game 62-58 with 9:31 left. From there, Texas Southern slammed the door on a comeback attempt as the three-ball keyed a 20-8 TSU run that allowed the Tigers to lead by double-digits over the final 5:56 of the game.
TSU shot 57.1 percent (36-of-63) from the field, including a 12-of-26 (46.2 percent) mark from deep. Texas A&M connected on 47 percent (30-of-64) of its shots from the floor.
Mitchell led the Aggies with 21 points and four assists. Savion Flagg added 17 points, nine rebounds and six assists.

- A second-half rally by Winthrop cost the Prairie View A&M University men’s basketball team during the Panthers’ 76-62 loss to the Eagles Saturday afternoon. Darius Williams came off the bench to lead the Panthers with 15 points. Gary Blackston scored 14 points and had a team-high tying seven rebounds, and Dennis Jones had a season-high 10 points. PVAMU led 21-9 early on and carried a 34-32 advantage into halftime before Winthrop’s run reversed fortunes. Bjorn Broman led Winthrop with 17 points.
- Despite 22 points from Martaveous McKnight and a 47-38 lead midway through the second half, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff’s men’s basketball team was unable to hold off Troy during a 71-63 Golden Lions loss Saturday afternoon. UAPB led 53-52 with 7:57 left before a 12-0 Troy run derailed the Lions’ upset bid. Reigning SWAC Player of the Week Shaun Doss scored 10 points. Alex Hicks led Troy with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
- The Jackson State men's basketball team used a balanced offensive attack to defeat Miles College 61-57 Saturday evening. Jontrell Walker dropped a game-high 17 points and handed out three assists. Jayveous McKinnis scored 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. Chris Howell added nine points and hauled in a game-high 15 rebounds.
- Tre Todd scored 18 points for the Alabama A&M University men’s basketball team, but the Bulldogs dropped a 71-63 contest at Hawai’I Saturday evening. Jalen Reeder added 10 points for Alabama A&M. The contest was tied at 34 entering the second half and though the Bulldogs led briefly, Hawai’I turned the tide in its favor with a 16-5 run that broke a 43-43 tie. Todd keyed a comeback for the Bulldogs that brought them within one possession late but the Rainbow Warriors outscored AAMU 8-2 in the final moments. Eddie Stansberry led Hawai’I with 26 points.
