Jaguars fall at No. 18 Marquette
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Southern University men’s basketball team dropped a 81-41 decision at No. 18 Marquette Friday evening at the Fiserv Forum.
Sidney Umude was the lone Jaguar in double figures, scoring 10 points along with three rebounds. Alex Ennis added nine points and a pair of steals, and Aaron Ray scored seven points. However, Southern sharpshooter Richard Lee – who entered the contest with the league’s top percentage from three-point range – was held scoreless.
After a Derias Johnson three-ball briefly put Southern ahead in the early goings, Marquette took control but Southern stayed in striking distance until an offensive surge – powered by a hot-shooting display from Markus Howard – put the Golden Eagles ahead by double-digits.
Howard accounted for 23 of his 26 points in the first half as Southern was outscored 33-5 during a 10-minute stretch of play in the period that resulted in a 47-15 lead late in the opening stanza. Marquette cruised from that point on.
The Jaguars shot just 25.9 percent from the field (14-of-54) during the game, compared to the Golden Eagle’s 45.0 percent clip from the floor (27-of-60). Marquette was 21-of-30 from the charity stripe while Southern was 11-of-18.
Southern was outrebounded 53-25 and allowed 34 points in the paint.
