SWAC Announces the Additions of Cable and Roberts
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Southwestern Athletic Conference Commissioner Dr. Charles McClelland has announced the additions of Jason Cable and Andrew Roberts to the SWAC office administrative staff.
Cable will serve the conference as the Senior Associate Commissioner for Administration while Roberts has been named Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations.

Cable brings an extensive background in athletics, academics, compliance, and athletic program leadership that has provided him with a unique skillset anchored by a proven record of leadership, integrity, and efficiency.
His career began as an student-athlete conferred with a variety of accolades at Alcorn State University (ASU) before transitioning to the Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach and a Health/Physical Education Instructor at ASU.
He quickly advanced to athletic administration serving as Assistant to the Athletic Director before moving to Livingstone College as the Associate Athletic Director for Compliance and CHAMPS Life Skills Coordinator.
Cables’ passion to influence athletic programs led him to Jackson State University (JSU) where he became the Assistant Director of Compliance. Later, an opportunity to serve within the MEAC led him to Savannah State University where he assumed the role of the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Game Day Operations.
Possessing multi-conference experience led Cable back to JSU as the Associate Athletic Director for Compliance. His productivity in that capacity led to a promotion to Senior Associate Athletic Director/Compliance Oversight and paved the way for a return to his alma mater (ASU) to serve as the Assistant Vice President for Athletic Compliance and Academic Services.
Cable has various external operations and revenue generation experiences stemming from his time spent at Alcorn State University where he served on the president’s cabinet.
During his tenure, Cable served as the principal investigator for the successful receipt of the $900,000 NCAA AASP Grant, secured over $2,000,000 in supplemental funding to support athletic programs and support services, while developing corporate partnerships with NASCAR, Allstate, NUCOR, USTA and Wal-Mart.
Under his leadership, the number of student-athletes with a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher increased by 70, and the department GPA reached an all-time high of 3.24. Cable also developed the nation’s first degree program in NCAA Compliance and Academic Progress Reporting.
Cable is a strong advocate for the student-athlete experience, and developed and secured funding for several new programs to enhance student-athlete development, including the Alcorn State University Student Athlete and the Family Enhancement (S.A.F.E.) Center which is an elite academic support, personal development and refueling facility dedicated to serving student–athletes and their families.
He is currently a doctoral candidate at Jackson State University where he is scheduled to complete his PhD in Higher Education Administration in 2019.
Roberts began working with the Texas Southern University Athletics department in April of 2012.
In his role as Director of Sports Information he assisted with a variety of duties, including coordinating media interviews, overseeing the compiling of game statistics and producing athletics publications consisting of media guides, game day programs and game notes.
Roberts also supervised the maintaining and updating of content on Texas Southern’s Official Athletics Website

In addition to his day-to-day duties Roberts was instrumental in the increasing of social media followership for TSU Athletics’ Twitter and Instagram accounts.
Under his direction TSU’s Twitter followers increased over 150 percent and in the Fall of 2018 the Tigers’ following on Twitter surpassed the 20k mark.
HBCU media rankings for Athletics Department’s Twitter accounts ranked Texas Southern’s Twitter account as one of the top five accounts in the MEAC and SWAC highlighted by a second place ranking within the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Roberts arrived to TSU after a three-year stint at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. While at UAPB Roberts assisted the department with marketing and development for all 16 sponsored sports at the University as well as marketing the entire athletic program to local businesses and corporate sponsors in efforts to generate revenue.
He also served as a member of the athletic department's executive staff serving as the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Information.
In addition to his marketing and media relations duties, Roberts was the lead department game operations administrator for all Golden Lions athletic home events. Enhancing the graphics development and marketing areas of the program were key components to the growth of the UAPB Athletic Department during Roberts’ tenure.

He began his career in athletics with the Prairie View A&M University Athletics department in 2003 serving in variety of roles including student assistant, graduate assistant, and Assistant Sports Information Director.
Roberts is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), and has previously served as the Vice President of the SWAC Sports Information Directors Committee.
He earned a Bachelor's degree in Communications from Prairie View A&M University in 2004. In 2007 he completed a Master's of Counseling degree from PVAMU.
