Harper leads AAMU past Southeastern Louisiana
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. —
DeShawna Harper did not flinch.
 
Harper delivered a clutch shot in the final minute of regulation, helping send Alabama A&M past Southeastern Louisiana 51-48 Saturday afternoon in a non-conference women's basketball game.
 
With the win, Alabama A&M (3-6) snaps a two-game losing skid while gaining confidence as it heads to Jacksonville, Fla. this week for the North Florida Holiday Classic.
 
From the opening tip, the game was close. Neither team was able to build a comfortable cushion, with the lead changing nine times.
 
Southeastern Louisiana (4-4) led by one with 6:50 remaining in the fourth period, but Tierra Dark responded with a bucket that sparked a 7-2 run by Alabama A&M.
 
Harper delivered the game's biggest moment. A few seconds after getting tabbed for an offensive foul on a potential game-changing shot, Harper came down the court and got almost the exact same look.
 
Harper made the opportunity count, draining a shot that gave Alabama A&M a four-point lead with 20 seconds remaining.
 
Harper led Alabama A&M with 12 points, while Nigeria Jones scored 11. Elexis Evans finished with nine points and eight rebounds.
 
Celica Sterling led Southeastern Louisiana with 20 points, while Jaclyn Scholvin scored 16.

Jackson State cruises versus Millsaps
JACKSON, Miss. –
The Jackson State women's basketball team dominated Millsaps College with an 88-38 victory Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center.
 
JSU improved to 3-5 and Millsaps fell to 7-2. There were four standouts that scored in double digits.
 
Sophomore guard D'Asia Mitchell dropped a game-high of 17 points and ran off with two steals. The Natchez, Mississippi native was efficient from beyond the arc, converting 5-of-9 3-point attempts.
 
Junior forward Marneisha Hamer scored 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field.
 
Senior guard Christina Ellis scored 13 points and added three assists. The San Diego, California product also recorded a pair of steals.
 
Sophomore power forward Antionette Womack added 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor.
 
For the game, the Lady Tigers shot 54.7 percent (35-of-64) from the field.
 
As a team, JSU converted 9-of-10 free-throw attempts.
 
The Lady Tigers forced the Lady Majors into 31 turnovers, while JSU only turned the ball over 13 times.

Solid outings by Hill, Boyd not enough for Grambling to overtake South Florida
TAMPA, Fla. -
Shakyla Hill and Jasmine Boyd combined for 29 points as the Grambling State University women’s basketball team could not recover from a 12-point halftime deficit in a 67-50 loss to South Florida on Saturday afternoon at the Yuengling Center.
 
Grambling State (1-7) trailed 17-11 at the end of the first quarter and 32-20 at the half. South Florida (8-2) extended the advantage to 53-32 entering the final period.
 
Hill finished with a double-double of 18 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, along with six assists and five steals. Boyd registered 11 points, one steal and one assist.
 
Sydni Harvey paced South Florida with 18 points, three rebounds, three assists and one steal. Laura Ferreira added 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Alyssa Rader recorded a double-double of 16 points and a game-high 16 boards, along with three assists, while Enna Pehadzic tallied 10 points, six rebounds and one assist.

TSU falls to Stephen F. Austin
NACOGDOCHES, Texas –
The Texas Southern University women’s basketball team had three players score in double figures, but it was not enough for the Lady Tigers to overcome Stephen F. Austin Saturday evening. Texas Southern fell 74-55 to the Ladyjacks.
 
Texas Southern trailed 25-15 at the end one, and faced a 43-31 deficit at the break. The Lady Tigers managed to outscore Stephen F. Austin 19-9 in the final quarter, but it was too little too late as the contest was put out of reach during a forgettable third quarter during which the Ladyjacks posted a 22-5 advantage.
 
Marquia Turner and Niya Mitchell each scored 16 points, with Mitchell coming a rebound shy of a double-double. Oliva Cunningham added 14 points. On the boards, Catherine Okwilagwe led TSU with 10 rebounds along with a pair of blocks. The Lady Tigers shot 23-of-61 (37.7 percent) from the field.


Chanell Hayes led the Ladyjacks with 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Riley Harvey added 13 points with six boards. Imani Johnson chipped in 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and Stephanie Visscher scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds.
