Valiant second-half comeback falls short for Devilettes at Arkansas State
JONESBORO, Ark. –
A second-half comeback attempt fell just short for the Mississippi Valley State University women’s basketball team, who suffered a 60-57 defeat at Arkansas State Thursday afternoon in First National Bank Arena.

Makayla Bonner led MVSU with 15 points, adding four rebounds. Kristy Parker scored 13 points along with six assists and five steals, and LaKendra Bassett recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.

Following a competitive first quarter where Valley trailed by a bucket at the end of it, the contest momentarily got away from the Devilettes thanks to a 16-7 scoring advantage for Arkansas State in the second quarter that left them trailing 32-21 at the break.

Mississippi Valley found its footing in the third as Parker, Bonner and Bassett each scored during a 6-2 run that cut the Devilettes’ deficit from 13 to seven midway through the period. Arkansas State pushed its lead back to 10, but Sydnie Ward buried a three and converted the front end of a trip to the line to put MVSU within six going into the fourth.

Bonner and Parker keyed a 6-0 run that tied the game at 47 with 8:04 to play, but following a lay-up by Arkansas State’s Starr Taylor, both sides went scoreless for the next three minutes. Peyton Martin sank a free throw to push the Red Wolves’ lead to three, but MVSU tied it at 50 on a jumper by Bonner and a free throw from Parker.

The Red Wolves then scrapped together an 8-1 run, and despite the Devilettes getting within one possession multiple times down the stretch, they were unable to overtake Arkansas State in the final moments.

Martin led Arkansas State with 20 points and nine rebounds. Morgan Wallace added 11 points for the Red Wolves.
