Three Lady Tigers in double-figures, but Grambling unable to overtake Wichita State
WICHITA, Kan. –
Three Grambling State University women’s basketball players reached double figures in scoring, but it wasn’t enough as Wichita State used a 14-2 run over a five-minute stretch between the third and fourth quarters to pull away from the Lady Tigers, 70-61, on Tuesday afternoon at the Charles Koch Arena.
 
Grambling State (1-6) trailed, 19-16, at the one quarter, but outscored Wichita State in the second, 15-12, as the two teams were tied at the half, 31-31. The Shockers outscored the Lady Tigers, 22-15, in the third to take a 53-47 advantage into the final quarter.
 
Shakyla Hill finished just shy of a triple-double as she recorded 20 points, nine assists, eight rebounds (all defensive) and four steals to pace Grambling State. Jazmin Boyd registered 16 points, including five 3-pointers, along with two assists, two boards and one steal, while Jasmine Forte tallied a career-high 11 points, on 5-of-7 shooting, with eight boards and two blocked shots.
 
Shyla Smith led Wichita State (6-4) with 15 points, eight rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal. Carla Bremaud and Jaida Hampton each had 14 points, while Raven Price chipped in with 10 points.

Lady Braves fall to Golden Eagles
HATTIESBURG, Miss. –
The Alcorn State University women’s basketball team dropped a 66-47 decision to Southern Miss Tuesday evening at the Reed Green Coliseum after being hampered by sluggish play during the bookend quarters.

Down 19-8 after one, Alcorn trailed by 14 at the half before a solid third quarter of play where Alcorn outscored USM 18-12 to get within striking distance going into the fourth, but Southern Miss scored the first 12 points of the final period, and Alcorn was unable to recover.

Toddriana Isler led the Lady Braves with 13 points and four steals, and De’Asia Brown and Charisma Walker each scored 12 points. Walker also grabbed six rebounds.

Southern Miss was led by Respect Leaphart’s 17 points and four rebounds. Megan Brown chipped in 13 points, four rebounds and three assists, and Allie Kennedy netted 12 points.

Alcorn State was limited to a 17-of-48 line from the floor (35.4 percent) and was outrebounded 39-27. The Lady Braves scored 14 points in the paint and picked up 12 points from the bench. Southern Miss’ bench accounted for 26 points.

  • Jackson State had six players in double figures as the Lady Tigers dominated Spring Hill College 105-57 Tuesday evening at Lee E. Williams Athletic Assembly Center. Christina Ellis led the way with 19 points, six steals, five rebounds, and four assists. Chelsea Causey scored 13 points, Antionette Womack added 12, and Sumer Williams, Jasmine Cowan and Marneisha Hamer each put up 10 points.
  • The Lady Tigers pulled away on the strength of a 31-12 scoring advantage in the second quarter that gave them a 51-29 advantage at the break. JSU led by at least 18 the rest of the way.
  • JSU shot 44-of-76 (57.9 percent) from the field and outrebounded Spring Hill 46-30. Elise Reilly led SHC with 17 points.
