Early barrage powers Southern to win over Louisiana College
BATON ROUGE, La. –
Alyric Scott and Brittany Rose each scored 15 points as the Southern University women’s basketball team cruised to a 77-53 victory over Louisiana College Monday evening at F.G. Clark Activity Center.

Scott also corralled a team-high eight boards. Skylar O’Bear scored 13 points and dished out five assists, and Taneara Moore scored 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting.

The Jaguars dominated from opening tip, scoring the game’s first 16 points on their way to a 22-9 advantage at half. Southern’s lead ballooned to 25 by intermission, and the Jaguars weren’t threatened in any facet from that point, leading by at least 19 the rest of the way.

Jaleya Gold led Louisiana College with 14 points. Southern shot 49.2 percent from the field (31-of-63), limiting the opposition to a 34.7 percent clip (17-of-49) from the floor.

UAPB takes down Tougaloo
PINE BLUFF, Ark. –
The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women’s basketball team overcame a slow start to defeat Tougaloo College 68-60 Monday evening at H.O. Clemmons Arena.

Kyeonia Harris led UAPB with 15 points and five assists. Aiya El Hassan added 12 points and eight rebounds, and Noe’ll Taylor scored 10 points.

UAPB trailed 14-9 after one, but the Lady Lions gained the upper hand with an 11-5 run to close the half with a 27-25 lead. After a lay-up by Tougaloo’s Melissa Creese made it 35-32 UAPB with 6:04 left in the third, the Lady Lions reeled off five quick points to push ahead by eight. The teams battled tightly down the stretch, but UAPB got back-to-back treys from El Hassan and Harris to break a 53-53 tie with 3:49 left in the game.

The shots sparked a game-deciding 10-3 run, from which UAPB was able to coast to the win. UAPB outrebounded Tougaloo 59-41.

Ahsia Clayton scored 14 to lead Tougaloo.
