Lady Panthers dominate Jarvis Christian to begin Pugh era
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Sandy Pugh era began on a high note as Prairie View A&M blew out Jarvis Christian 117-32 Friday evening to open its regular season.
“I thought we came out with a lot of energy,” said Pugh. “I think we had a lot of butterflies, and that was obvious with layups and other things we missed. The speed was there and the intensity was there, we just have to do a better job of finishing and executing.”
Both teams came out playing fast in the first quarter, but the Panther’s pulled ahead for their first lead of the game at 6-4. They pushed their lead 11-5 with 3:10 left in the first before going on a 17-0 run to end the period.
The Lady Panthers were in control throughout the second quarter as they went on a 21-0 run and led 48-5. PVAMU went into the half leading 55-13, with senior guard Shala Dobbins leading the team with 12 points. The Lady Panthers cruised from there.
Newman lead the team with 21 points, three assists and six steals. Dobbins followed with 16 points, three assists, one block and two steals, while senior forward La’Neique Nealey chipped in 14 points, four assists, and one block, adding three steals.
The Lady Panthers used nightmarish defensive pressure to stymie the Lady Bulldogs, forcing 41 turnovers and converting them into 69 points. Prairie View dominated on the interior as well, scoring 82 points in the paint and limiting Jarvis Christian to an 18-percent clip from the floor (9-of-50).

Hill paces Lady Tigers to resounding win over McNeese State
GRAMBLING, La. – Behind a stat-stuffing performance from Shakyla Hill, Grambling State handled McNeese State 75-51 Friday evening at the Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center to bring the Lady Tigers their first win of the season.
Hill led Grambling with 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting along with eight steals, eight assists and five rebounds. Hill scored her 1,500
th career point in the process.
Madison Connally-Banks added 12 points and a pair of steals on 5-of-6 shooting, and Candice Parramore chipped in 10 points.
Never challenged for the majority of the game, Grambling State (1-1) carried a double-digit lead into the second quarter, ballooning that advantage to as many as 23 before going into the lockers up 38-18. Grambling held the Cowgirls to a 24-percent clip from the floor during the first half while shooting 50 percent (16-of-32) along the way.
McNeese got no closer than 13 the rest of the way, as Grambling used an overwhelming advantage as far as points in the paint to find easy buckets and rebuild its lead to as many as 24 points down the stretch of the fourth quarter.
The Lady Tigers connected on 53.3 percent of it shots in the game, and managed 27 points off turnovers.
